Air Source Heat Pumps

<< Back to renewable energy overview

Electric Air Source heat pumps use the difference between outdoor air temperatures and indoor air temperatures to heat your home. An Air Source Heat Pump is designed to move heat from the outside of your home to the inside.

The external unit of the heat pump contains coils filled with refrigerant which absorb heat from the outside air. The refrigerant is much cooler than the outside air and therefore able to absorb heat.

Air source heat pumps run at slightly lower efficiency than ground source. However, the advantage that they have over ground source is lower installation costs, since you don’t need any external space to fit one, other than a section of wall.
