Biomass Units<< Back to renewable energy overview Really, there is nothing new about biomass technology. Wooden pellets, farm waste, anything organic that burns is really a carbon neutral fuel. A biomass unit is really a more energy efficient stove that can burn a variety of fuels. For greater efficiency, biomass units tend to be large scale installations that can feed hundreds of houses, schools, swimming pools etc, with copious amounts of hot water and heating. This type of scheme is usually part of a CHP Programme (Combined Heat and Power). Smaller scale biomass units would be suitable for larger properties, estates, farms or any where there is an abundant supply of ‘clean’ organic waste.
